While a healthy and balanced diet is important at any age, it becomes even more important when you are of old age. As we age, our body goes through changes that may make it harder to absorb certain nutrients. While we need fewer calories, we need certain vitamins and nutrients to make up our meals. This is why we consider meal planning important when providing senior care.

As a home care agency in British Columbia we recommend the following tips when preparing healthy and balanced meals for seniors:

  • Include plenty of fruit and vegetables
Aim for 2 to 3 servings of colorful fruits and vegetables daily
  • Add calcium for bone health
This can come from milk, yogurt, cheese, or non-dairy food such as broccoli, almonds, tofu, and kale
  • Look for “good fat” not “no fat”
Omega 3 fatty acids can protect the body against disease and support your mood
  • Vary their sources of protein
Protein does not have to come from meat exclusively. You can add fish, beans, peas, eggs, nuts, and seeds
  • Add more fiber to their diet
This can help promote healthy digestion

Do you need help in ensuring you are eating healthy and balanced meals? You can seek the help of our personal care aid in Burnaby British Columbia. Feel free to contact us at St Marys Home Care.

Our professional caregivers will assist you with various services such as veterans care, dementia care, personal hygiene, companionship care, and non-medical home care in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The CDC accumulated a total of 3,322 cases of acute hepatitis B in 2018, for an overall incidence rate of 1.0 cases in every 100,000 population.

What is Hepatitis B?
Hepatitis B is a fatal liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It is transmitted when semen, blood, or any other body fluids from a person with HBV is passed on to a person who is not infected. This can happen through sex with an infected partner, sharing needles and syringes, birth to an infected mother, contact with blood from an infected person, or sharing items with an infected person that can break the skin.

How Can HBV Increase Your Risk of Cancer?
Chronic HBV infection can lead to complications like chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). HCC is one of the five major cancers in the world and is the most important etiologic agent of liver cancer globally, particularly in high-prevalence areas of liver cancer.

What Can You Do?
Hepatitis B is vaccine-preventable, meaning you and your loved ones can get vaccinated to avoid contracting the hepatitis B virus.

As a provider of Non-Medical Home Care in Vancouver, British Columbia, we encourage that you and your loved ones get vaccinated to prevent complex medical conditions from developing. Contact your doctor, primary health care provider, or Homecare Agency in Surrey British Columbia to ask about Hepatitis B vaccinations.

Proper nutrition plays an important role in the improvement and maintenance of a senior’s overall health and well-being. An unhealthy diet can affect a variety of factors in a person’s aging process, such as their blood pressure and kidney functions. And although there several culprits that may damage these factors, sodium is a major contributor to kidney and blood pressure-related conditions.

Following a low-sodium diet is important to healthy eating. And as a certified provider of professional Senior Care in Burnaby British Columbia, we highly encourage that seniors follow the recommendation given by the Food and Nutrition Board suggesting a low intake of about 1,200 milligrams of sodium/day for seniors after seventy years of age.

Tips to Lower Sodium Intake

We at St Marys Home Care suggest you do the following things to lower sodium intake:

  • When buying groceries, carefully check nutrition labels and find products with low sodium content.
  • Choose fresh fruits and vegetables rather than frozen ones.
  • Limit consumption of prepackaged and processed foods.
  • Avoid adding salt to dishes and instead use herbs and other spices.

It can be tricky for seniors to stay consistent with a new diet. Luckily, with the right Senior Care, your loved ones will get the assistance and care they need to continue living healthily.
